Cooperative Learning

What is Cooperative Learning?

A teaching strategy structured around small groups of students, typically 4 students with different levels of ability, who cooperate together as a group.  A variety of activities are used to improve the students understanding of content.  Each group member's success is dependent on the group's success.

Why use Cooperative Learning?

Students seem to learn more, remember content longer, and enhance their critical thinking skills.  When used effectively students are more engaged in the subject than they are during traditional lecture.

How I will use Cooperative Learing in Art :

  • small groups will consist of 4 or 5 students - students will collaborate around their assigned art table

  • teacher as facilitator during first week of small groups

  • teacher as facilitator will bring a comfort level to the classroom environment

  • using small groups will create a relationship between the students in my classroom

  • the activities performed in the small groups will help students understand the content more clearly

Small Group Discussions

  • "Small Group Discussions" will only be used when teaching the Art History portion of each art project

  • "Small Group Discussions" will enhance students understanding of Art History's connection to society

  • small groups will get together 9 weeks out of the year - 20 minutes a day

  • various objectives will be given to students before they begin their discussions

  • objectives will change from discussion to discuission, just as the content changes throughout the year

  • I will always observe the groups and verbally give insight or comments about the discussions

  • the numerous small group discussions will help create bonds and relationships needed

Group Art Projects

  • from time to time there will be group projects in this art classroom (no group projects for Art I 2015)

  • students will get into their "Discussion Groups" to develop a collaborative piece of art

  • bonds and relationships built between the students during "Small Group Discussions" is necessarry for the Group Art Projects

  • students will use their newfound comfort to give ideas and opinions in devising imaginative and original creations
