7 Differentiation Strategies Used in My Art Room:

The differentiated learning strategies in my art room are designed to help ALL students but are particularly effective with special education and unmotivated students.  My goal for using differentiation in Art is so that I can reach all multiple intelligences within my classroom and so that special education and unmotivated students are always included and always feel included.

1.  Strong Visual Components

2.  Collaborative Activities

Special Education students will always be a part of the all-inclusive art classroom.  Groups organized with students of different abilities allows all levels of students to function well together and enhance their understanding of subject knowledge.

3.  Varied Pace of Instruction

Special Education students all learn at varying rates.  The brain needs some degree of challenge to remain stimulated.  New skills are better grasped when taught at the individuals appropriate speed.

4.  Peer Coaching

Assigning students with roles and maintaining those roles will not only teach special education students, but all students, rythm and stability.  Roles will provide students with purpose and responsibility which will help the students motivate each other.  The special education students will be participants who can receive motivation and provide other students with motivation.

5.  Multi-Sensory Approaches

The more sensory avenues engaged when introducing new material to Special Education students, the more likely they will learn what is being taught. Some Multi Sensory approaches are: tasting, movement, touch, listening...

6.  Personal Interest Based Choices

7.  Strength-Based Assessment

Rubrics, Portfolios, Sorting, and Observations are just a few ways to assess the strengths of ALL students, not just the Special Education students. Various assessments within the classroom will allow teachers to focus on the Special Education students individual strengths.

  • Create an inclusive environment.

  • Meet the needs of all children.

  • Reach from the most challenged students to the most gifted students.

  • Will allow special education students to fully participate.

  • Enrich and improve the classroom experience of the general education students.

  • EVERYONE LEARNS

Special Education students with reading issues have an easier time with clarification when working with images.

High interest levels in a subject matter accelerate the learning process for ALL.  Allow ALL students to make their own choices for their projects.
